"Music draws stories out of me" - Interview with Chimeka Garricks

InterKontinental 03.03.2023

Author, editor and lawyer Chimeka Garricks talks with us about the inspiration for his book and the workshop of the same name he held in Berlin in autumn 2022. In our interview "Stories born from Songs" he reflects upon the similarities and differences of music and literature, approaches to writing through music and the difficulty of answering such questions at all when one would rather grab a book out of the shelf.

Chimeka Garricks was born in Dublin and raised in Port Harcourt. He is a lawyer, editor, and ghost copywriter. His fiction includes a novel, ‘Tomorrow Died Yesterday’; and a collection of short stories, ‘A Broken People’s Playlist’ (which he wrote with the aid of music while trying to avoid working on another novel). He would rather choose soundtracks for movies or be a DJ, but life is not fair. His favorite authors include Chuma Nwokolo, Cyprian Ekwensi, Zukiswa Wanner, and Junot Diaz. He lives in Lagos with his wife, three children, and dog (who suffers from an entitlement complex).
