About us

Book readings and launches

We host readings, book premieres as well as conversation series, theater and spoken word performances.

In 2018, our inaugural year, we hosted the first book readings for example with Yaa Gyasi, Niq Mhlongo, Sulaiman Addonia and Nadifa Mohamed. Since then, we have had a variety of renowned authors, including Michelle Bartley, Panashe Chigumadzi, Petina Gappah, Bartholomew Grill, Tendai Huchu, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, Emanuel Iduma, Tete Loeper, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Sarah Ladipo Manyika, Yara Nakahanda Monteiro, Johny Pitts, Pierrot Raschdorff, and Emilia Roig.

We are also very happy to have hosted many book launches. For example, Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor launched her novel 'The Sea of Dragonflies' in our bookshop. In 2020 our association member Flora Veit-Wild presented her book 'They called you Dambudzo' with us. In 2021 we co-hosted the book premieres of Laura Holder for 'VERSUCH DICH ABZUSCHREIBEN' and of Fiston Mwanza Mujila for 'Kontinentaldrift'.

It is important to us to promote a diversity of genres and of authors from the African continent and the diaspora.

These readings often take place in our bookstore in the Sonntagstraße in Berlin and some are in collaboration with other literary partner institutions such as the Berlin libraries (the Pablo Neruda Library, the Stadtbibliothek Buch, the Ingeborg Drewitz Library in Steglitz), the Literaturhaus Berlin, the Literary Colloquium Berlin, the Frankfurt Book Fair or publishing houses (mikrotext, Eden books, Kampa Verlag, Verlag Das Wunderhorn).
